A few months ago my brother said to me, “I think we should address the white elephant in the room.” Now, if there’s one thing an English degree is good for (and there is only one thing), it’s being a word snob. So I turned my sarcasm up to eleven and asked, “Was I supposed to bring a small and inexpensive gift?”
There are a lot of elephants in our lexicon. White elephants. Pink elephants. Political elephants. Heffalumps (and Woozles). Though I do have serious doubts on whether there’s any actual difference between pink elephants and heffalumps. They’re both illusions, and they basically have the same song. Someone please make a mashup, stat.
As for the elephant in the room, I suppose we’d better address the pink, white, and conservative one standing in the corner right now.
